Wary of the growing adoption of AI in the business world? Worried about losing your job to technology?

You’d better get used to it because 77% of hiring managers say AI is a beneficial resume skill for 2024, according to a new report from ResumeTemplates.com. In fact, six out of 10 employers say they’d choose a less-experienced candidate, providing they had AI skills.

From automating routine tasks to enhancing decision-making processes, the growing prevalence of AI is reshaping how businesses operate and employees engage with their professional responsibilities.

ResumeTemplates, which surveyed 780 hiring managers for the study, added that 73% of companies are expanding their use of AI in 2024.

Many employers believe AI is a skill even entry-level candidates should have, the report said. Nearly 30% deemed it “very important,” while 40% say it’s “somewhat important.”

“Possessing at least a basic understanding of a specific domain, in combination with having AI skills, can enable candidates to compete with more experienced counterparts,” said Andrew Stoner, ResumeTemplates’ executive resume writer and career coach.

Stoner said candidates with less experience who are looking to stand out in the hiring process should highlight job-specific, relevant skills on their resume and provide solid examples during the interview process.

“Obtaining in-demand professional or technical certifications is another way candidates can level up,” he said. “And AI-generated work samples or simulations might be a new strategy for candidates to demonstrate their skills.”

Microsoft has quietly announced an enhancement to the Edge browser’s dark mode, making it even darker.

The current dark mode, characterized by its grey tones, is set to be replaced with a richer black version, providing users with an even darker browsing experience.

This update is currently available for testing in Edge Canary, Microsoft’s experimental version of the Edge browser. It is used to test and develop new features before they’re rolled out to the general public.

This update aims to provide a more comfortable viewing experience in low light settings and to give the browser a sleek, modern appearance.

This move towards a black version of dark mode further demonstrates Microsoft’s commitment to user customization and choice, and it will no doubt be welcomed by those who prefer the aesthetic and practical benefits of a darker interface.

The last big update for Edge added a new ‘Edge Secure Network’ feature with up to 5GB of data, significantly increasing from the previously offered 1GB. This new VPN-like feature uses Cloudflare’s routing to encrypt your internet connection and secure your data against online threats like hacking.

Microsoft is also adding a new mouse gestures feature to the browser, allowing users to control the browser with the mouse.

Microsoft will retire the Windows Mail and Calendar applications on Windows 10 and Windows 11 at the end of the year, first auto-migrating users to the new Outlook for Windows app in August.

Initially developed for Windows 10, Windows Mail and Calendar are built-in Windows applications that provide an easy-to-use application for retrieving your email and scheduling events, tasks, and appointments.

With the release of Windows 11, Microsoft continued to bundle the Mail and Calendar apps with the operating, even though it is not considered a modern email application.

However, this is about to change, with Microsoft confirming that they are moving forward with plans to retire both apps and transition users to a new Outlook for Windows app already available for testing.

Mail and Calendar retired at the end of year

Microsoft began alerting consumers and enterprise customers that they are retiring the Windows Mail and Calendar apps in 2024, recommending they start testing the new Outlook app.

Windows users can test the new app by enabling a toggle in the upper right-hand corner of Windows Mail to automatically install the new Outlook app and import your settings from the Mail application.

Toggle to enable the new Outlook app

At the same time, Microsoft issued a Microsoft 365 MC590123 advisory warning customers that they would automatically begin replacing the Mail and Calendar with the Outlook app in September 2024.

Microsoft also said that users will begin seeing “tips” alerting them of the change and prompting them to try the new Outlook app.

A day later, after an outcry from users, Microsoft said that they were reevaluating the timing of this change.

“We are reevaluating the timing and implementation of this change and will provide updated information shortly. Thank you for your patience,” said Microsoft in an update to the advisory.

In a new Microsoft 365 MC650424 advisory, Microsoft is now alerting customers that they are moving forward with the migration.

“The Mail and Calendar apps for Windows are being replaced with the new Outlook for Windows.”

“At the end of 2024 we will be ending support for the Mail and Calendar apps for Windows. The new Outlook for Windows helps people be more productive and in control of their inbox.”

This new message also moves up the timeline, stating that Microsoft will start transitioning Mail and Calendar users to the new Outlook app in August 2023.

“In late August of 2023, we will also begin a process of auto-migrating Mail & Calendar app users to the new Outlook for Windows with an option to go back if they choose,” reads the MC650424 bulletin.

“Users can go back to the current Mail and Calendar apps by clicking the toggle in the new Outlook for Windows.”

New Microsoft Outlook app

Regardless of whether you decide to test the new Outlook app now or wait, users will automatically be migrated at the end of the year.

At that time, Windows Mail and Calendar will no longer be supported or available for download. Furthermore, all new Windows 11 devices will come with Outlook for Windows as the default mailbox application free.

Microsoft reiterated that these changes will not affect regular Outlook desktop application users but only Windows Mail and Calendar users.

For those users who decide to switch to the Outlook app, it does come with additional features, such as better integration with other email providers, the ability to personalize the interface, new calendar features, and automatic support for package delivery and airplane reservation tracking.

YouTube is currently running what it describes as a “small experiment globally,” warning users to toggle off their ad blockers and avoid being limited to only three video views.

As first spotted by a Reddit user on Wednesday, YouTube now displays a pop-up that notifies ad blocker users targeted by this test that “video player will be blocked after 3 videos.”

“It looks like you may be using an ad blocker. Video playback will be blocked unless YouTube is allowlisted or the ad blocker is disabled,” the message adds.

“Ads allow YouTube to stay free for billions of users worldwide. You can go ad-free with YouTube Premium, and creators can still get paid from your subscription.”

After receiving this warning, YouTube users will have only two options: to disable their ad blocker and allow ads or subscribe to YouTube Premium to get rid of all advertisements.

YouTube confirmed the alerts are part of an experiment and said the company urges viewers to allow ads on the platform or try YouTube Premium.

“We’re running a small experiment globally that urges viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium,” YouTube told BleepingComputer.

YouTube ad blocker warning

When asked if the company plans to block users from accessing the platform if they’re using ad blockers, YouTube said that playback might be temporarily disabled in “extreme cases.”

“In extreme cases, where viewers continue their use of ad blockers, playback will be temporarily disabled. We take disabling playback very seriously, and will only disable playback if viewers ignore repeated requests to allow ads on YouTube,” the company said.

“To prevent disruption as part of this experiment, viewers using ad blockers may disable their ad blocker, allow YouTube ads or subscribe to YouTube Premium.”

YouTube didn’t share how many and what regions are involved in this experiment and are seeing these warnings.

This follows another “small experiment” in May, when YouTube tested directly blocking ad blocker users from accessing the platform.

“Ad blocker detection is not new, and other publishers regularly ask viewers to disable ad blockers,” a spokesperson told BleepingComputer at the time.

YouTube’s Music and Premium services have recently surpassed 80 million subscribers, adding over 30 million within a single year, according to Variety.

Microsoft is expanding support for passkeys in Windows 11 to make it more secure to log into websites and apps using biometric authentication.

Passkeys are unique codes linked to specific devices such as computers, tablets, or smartphones. Using passkeys significantly reduces the risk of data breaches as they provide protection against phishing attacks that cannot steal them and gain unauthorized access.

Passkeys offer a more secure and convenient alternative to passwords as they allow using personal identification numbers (PINs) or biometric authentication like fingerprints or facial recognition to log in to websites and applications.

This eliminates the need to remember and manage multiple passwords, enhancing overall security and user experience.

As Microsoft revealed, the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23486 release pushed to the Dev Channel has passwordless improvements allowing customers to sign into their accounts using passkeys and Windows Hello.

“We are improving the passkey experience for Windows users. They can now go to any app or website that supports passkeys to create and sign in using passkeys with the Windows Hello native experience,” Microsoft’s Amanda Langowski and Brandon LeBlanc said.

“Once a passkey is created, users can use Windows Hello (face, fingerprint, PIN) to sign in. In addition, users can use their phone to complete the application logon process.”

To use passkeys on your Windows device for website sign-ins, you have to go to passkey-enabled websites like bestbuy.com, ebay.com, or google.com, create a passkey by accessing from your account settings, and then sign out of your account and then sign back in using your newly created passkey.

You can also manage your passkeys with the help of a new passkey management dialog integrated into the Windows settings by going to Settings > Accounts > Passkeys.

You will see all passkeys saved on the Windows device, and you can search for and delete the ones you no longer use.

Managing passkeys on Windows 11

When testing the feature, BleepingComputer could use Windows 11 passkeys with Best Buy and Microsoft accounts when attempting to log in

However, while Google allowed for the creation of a passkey, it never prompted us to log in with a passkey when trying to sign into a Google account.

Logging into BestBuy site with a passkey

In May, Google announced that it’s rolling out support for passkeys for Google Accounts across all its services and platforms to allow users to sign into their accounts without entering a password or using 2-Step Verification (2SV).

In May 2022, Microsoft and Apple also confirmed their commitment to passkeys, endorsing Web Authentication (WebAuthn) credentials (aka FIDO credentials).

This has now become the standard approach for accessing accounts without requiring traditional passwords across platforms controlled by the three tech giants.

“Passkeys will allow you to replace passwords when you sign into a web site or application that supports them,” Langowski and LeBlanc said.

“Passkeys represent a future where bad actors will have a much harder time stealing and using your credentials when signing into a web site or application. Passkeys are phish-resistant, recoverable, and faster for users.”

Microsoft announced the public preview launch of Win32 app isolation, a new Windows 11 security feature designed to sandbox Windows desktop applications using the Win32 API.

Recently announced during Microsoft’s Build 2023 conference, Win32 app isolation uses AppContainer to boost security by mitigating the potential harm caused by compromised applications and protecting the user’s privacy.

It also ensures that apps are running with low privilege and implements the principle of least privilege to prevent unauthorized access to the user’s information without first asking for consent.

“The Win32 application is launched as a low integrity process using AppContainer, which is recognized as a security boundary by Microsoft,” said David Weston, Microsoft VP for Enterprise & OS Security.

“Consequently, the process is limited to a specific set of Windows APIs by default and is unable to inject code into any process operating at a higher integrity level.”

If an app vulnerability is exploited, the AppContainer execution environment ensures that the Win32 app remains restricted to the resources granted within its confines.

This prevents malicious apps from seizing control of the entire system, providing an additional layer of defense and safeguarding the system against potential compromise attempts.

Application developers can update their Win32 apps by implementing isolation measures using tools made available by Microsoft.

This enables them to bolster the overall security of their software and the devices it will run on by ensuring that it doesn’t add to the system’s attack surface.

For comprehensive guidance and further details on Win32 app isolation, developers can visit this GitHub page which provides valuable information on getting started and the tools needed to repackage MSIX applications to run isolated.

“Win32 app isolation is an addition to the family of existing Windows sandbox options, such as Windows Sandbox and Microsoft Defender Application Guard,” said David Weston, Microsoft VP for Enterprise & OS Security.

“While these options are based on virtualization-based security, Win32 app isolation is built on the foundation of AppContainers (and more).

“AppContainers are specifically designed to encapsulate and restrict the execution of processes, helping to ensure they operate with limited privileges, commonly referred to as low integrity levels.”

Update: Revised the article to clarify that the feature works with all apps using the Win32 API.

Microsoft announced today that users would also be able to communicate with Bing Chat, the AI-powered chat-based version of its Bing search engine, via voice commands.

Starting today, you can click the microphone icon in Bing Chat and ask your questions instead of writing them down.

“We know many of you love using voice input for chat on Mobile. It’s now also available on desktop by clicking on the microphone icon in the Bing Chat box,” the Bing Team said.

“We currently support English, Japanese, French, German, and Mandarin, with more languages on the way.”

For those who also want Bing Chat to reply using voice, Microsoft says there’s also support for text-to-speech answers.

“Bing Chat also supports text to speech answers—it will respond to your questions in its own voice,” the company added today.

This week, Redmond also announced that it added support for Bing Image Creator to all chat modes after fully integrating the AI image generation tool into Bing Chat in March.

Bing Chat will also generate more visual results for travel queries starting this week, with links to extra details from Bing Travel.

The maximum number of turns allowed for single Bing Chat conversations has also been raised from 20 to 30. The overall number of turns per day has also seen a substantial increase, reaching 300.

These updated limits apply to ongoing conversations and retroactively to previous exchanges stored in your Bing Chat history. Therefore, you can revisit and resume conversations that may have previously reached a turn limit and seamlessly continue from where you left off.

Microsoft announced Bing Chat, its chat-based and AI-powered Bing search engine, on February 7, when it also released a new version of the Edge web browser with new sidebar Chat and Compose features.

The company also integrated Bing Chat into the Windows 11 search box with the release of the Windows 11 22H2 ‘Moment 2’ update.

Microsoft revealed one week ago that it would end support for the Windows standalone Cortana app starting in late 2023 after its spot on Windows desktops has been filled by the AI-powered Windows Copilot unveiled during this year’s Build conference.

Microsoft is doubling its efforts to court the gaming community with a new feature, “Edge for Gamers” mode, which promises to elevate the user experience inside and outside gaming sessions.

In the initial descriptions provided by Microsoft, the Edge for Gamers mode will enable a variety of enhancements. It’s said to introduce a gaming-focused homepage and add new sidebar apps that cater specifically to the needs of gamers.

One of the highlight features is an efficiency mode tailored for PC gaming, presumably designed to minimize browser resource usage to maximize in-game performance.

Dark mode and gaming-specific themes are also on the menu, offering customization options that align with popular gaming aesthetics.

Currently, Edge for Gamers mode is in the early stages of development.

At present, activating the mode doesn’t significantly change the browser experience. However, once enabled, users are automatically redirected to the themes section of the Edge Add-ons Store, and apps for popular gaming platforms Discord and Twitch are added to the sidebar.

While it’s still early days for the Edge for Gamers mode, Microsoft’s move signals a growing interest in tailoring products and features for the gaming community.

Meta is now rolling out ‘Chat Lock,’ a new WhatsApp privacy feature allowing users to block others from accessing their most personal conversations.

Chat Lock will create a new folder that can be locked with a password or biometric methods like a fingerprint.

You can ensure the privacy of your conversations by choosing the lock option after tapping the name of a one-to-one or group chat.

“Locking a chat takes that thread out of your inbox and puts it behind its own folder that can only be accessed with your device’s password or biometric, like a fingerprint,” WhatsApp said today.

It will also automatically hide details of the locked chat in notifications to prevent others from snooping in while using the phone.

“We believe this feature will be great for people who share their phones from time to time with a family member, or in moments where someone else is holding your phone at the exact moment an extra-special chat arrives,” the company added.

To view locked chats, gently pull down on your inbox, and authenticate yourself with your password or the biometric identification you used when locking the conversation.

Today, WhatsApp added that it’s planning to further expand Chat Lock capabilities to provide users with additional features.

These forthcoming additions include locks explicitly designed for companion devices and the ability to establish a personalized password for your chats, allowing the use of a distinct password separate from your phone’s credentials.

WhatsApp also introduced end-to-end encryption seven years ago and started rolling out end-to-end encrypted chat backups to iOS and Android five years later, in October 2021, to block access to backed-up chat content.

YouTube is running an experiment asking some users to disable their ad blockers or pay for a premium subscription, or they will not be allowed to watch videos.

“It looks like you may be using an ad blocker. Ads allow YouTube to stay free for billions of users worldwide,” the message adds.

Upon receiving this notification, users will have two options: either disable their ad blocker to allow YouTube ads or consider subscribing to YouTube Premium to get rid of all advertisements.

As explained in the pop-up, “you can go ad-free with YouTube Premium, and creators can still get paid from your subscription.”

A YouTube spokesperson confirmed this experiment and said the company urges viewers to try YouTube Premium or allow ads on the platform.

“We’re running a small experiment globally that urges viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium,”

“Ad blocker detection is not new, and other publishers regularly ask viewers to disable ad blockers.”

YouTube ad blocker warning

It’s currently unknown across how many regions YouTube is displaying these warnings or if the company plans to stop those using ad blockers from accessing the platform altogether.

This comes after YouTube’s Music and Premium services surpassed 80 million subscribers in November 2022, adding more than 30 million within a little over a year, according to a Variety report,

Prodding users towards YouTube Premium will definitely help maintain this accelerated membership growth rate.

Making ads increasingly longer during the last several years and making some unskippable will also likely push some viewers towards signing up for an ad-free experience via YouTube Premium on platforms where ad blocking is impossible or rooting the device (e.g., iOS, some TV OSs).
